Flat Rock, a suburb of nearby Hendersonville, was once a destination for Charleston-based elites to build their summer homes, in order to escape the coastal heat and threats of spreading malaria at the time. After years of wealthy individuals calling Flat Rock home, the town flourished and began attracting others to enjoy the serenity and plentiful hunting, foraging, and farming available in the mountains. Nowadays, Flat Rock is a predominantly residential community, with a small downtown area that features a few local shops and restaurants, and the locally heralded theater named the Flat Rock Playhouse. 

Homes in the Flat Rock area are generally more affordable than nearby Hendersonville and Asheville, and feature mostly ranch style properties due to the relatively level land available there. However, you can find newer, more modern options in the mix. For more urban activities and a thriving art scene, Downtown Asheville can be reached within about a 30-minute drive, and gives you access to Mission Hospital and the Asheville Regional Airport as well. For the outdoor lovers, travel just 30 minutes west to the Pisgah National Forest, where there is no end to the hiking, camping, and water activities available.
